Help, limits and self-exclusion

If you are here because play has got out of hand, start with the phone number below. The rest of the page sets out the tools the law gives you, in the order you are likely to need them.

Updated

0800-723-770 is the toll-free assistance line shown on the Gambling Regulatory Authority's website. You do not need to have decided anything before you call.

Call first

The number is in the footer of the regulator's website, gra.go.ke, under "Need assistance?". If you would rather go in person, the Authority's contact page gives its office as ACK Garden Annex, 7th floor, Bishop Road and 1st Ngong Avenue, Nairobi, open Monday to Friday from 8am to 5pm.

Signs that crash games are causing harm

Crash rounds are short and the next one starts almost at once, so a session can run to many rounds before you notice the time. Some signs that play has moved from a choice to a pressure:

  • you raise the stake, or push the auto cash-out higher, to win back what you lost;
  • you play for longer, or with more money, than you meant to;
  • money meant for rent, school fees, food or a loan repayment goes into the game;
  • you borrow, sell things or take mobile loans to keep playing;
  • you hide how much you play from people close to you;
  • you feel restless or low when you are not playing, or play to get away from a problem;
  • you pay for a predictor app or a signal group hoping it will cover your losses.

One of these is reason enough to use the tools below. You do not have to wait until things are serious.

Limits every online licensee must offer

Regulation 84 of the Gambling Control (Conduct of Gambling Operations) Regulations, 2026 (L.N. 112 r.84(1)-(2)) requires online operators to give players tools that work in real time, including:

  • deposit limits that you set by the day, the week and the month;
  • loss, session and expenditure limits;
  • reality checks: pop-up notices that show how long you have been playing;
  • an easy option to exclude yourself for at least 24 hours, linked to the national self-exclusion register.

The law leaves the amounts to you. No maximum stake, deposit or loss is set in the Act or in the Regulations as gazetted. The minimum online stake is KES 20 (s.71(1) of the Act). A licensee may not give you credit to gamble or make offers designed to get you to gamble more (s.74(1)).

Self-exclusion under the Act

Section 115(1) of the Gambling Control Act, 2025 lets a person who recognises that their gambling is harmful enter a voluntary self-exclusion agreement with a licensee, covering all gambling, online gambling included. The 2026 Conduct Regulations set out how to make an exclusion apply to every licensee at once:

  1. Apply to the Authority on Form 1, which is in the First Schedule to L.N. 112, stating the period you want and attaching a copy of your national ID or passport (r.70).
  2. Pick six months, one year, two years or an indefinite period (Form 1, Part C). Once the period starts, it cannot be shortened.
  3. The Authority acknowledges your application within seven days and gives you written notice when the exclusion takes effect (r.70(3)-(4)).

Once you are registered you may not place a bet, open a gambling account, receive promotions or claim winnings (r.70(5)). Licensees must deny you access, refund within seven days any deposit taken in breach of the exclusion, and report attempts to the Authority (r.74(1)). They must also remove you from their marketing lists within two days (s.115(4)(c) of the Act), and an operator that fails to carry out a written self-exclusion request within seven days commits an offence (s.115(5)). If you choose an indefinite period, you cannot apply to have it lifted for at least three years (r.71(3)).

Online platforms must also offer self-exclusion that takes effect in real time (r.67(3)), so you can shut your own account today while the Form 1 application is processed.

What you can do today

  • Set a daily deposit limit in every account you hold, at an amount you could lose without missing anything you need.
  • Switch off any automatic betting, so that each round needs a decision from you.
  • Delete saved payment details and move the game off your phone's home screen.
  • Tell one person you trust how much you have been playing.
  • Take an in-account break of at least 24 hours, then decide on a longer exclusion with a clear head.
  • Leave any predictor or signal group. Nothing it sells can change a round.

If someone under eighteen is gambling

Gambling is for adults of the age of majority, which in Kenya is eighteen; L.N. 112 r.92 bars persons under eighteen from gambling. Operators must require proof of age before registering anyone and must stop minors being registered (s.72(2)-(3) of the Act), and betting with a child is an offence carrying a fine of up to KES 1,000,000, a year in prison, or both (s.109). If you know of a young person with an account, the toll-free line above is a place to report it.

If you are worried about someone else

You can call the same line for advice. Talk about what you have noticed, such as missing money or long sessions, rather than about the person's character, and leave the decision to self-exclude with them: the Form 1 application has to be theirs.
